Mountain View Power- Part 1

The trade name Mountain View Power was registered in 2010 when the Olds Institute signed a service agreement with Utility Network and Partners Inc. to market retail electricity. A volunteer committee evaluated the opportunity and was formed to oversee Mountain View Power as a social enterprise. The goal of this social enterprise was to generate a revenue stream that would enable Olds Institute to re-invest in community development and programs.  As a competitive energy marketer, Mountain View Power offers floating and fixed rates for electricity and natural gas. Hedges of electricity and  natural gas supply contracts are secured by Utility Network and Partners Inc. which also manages all billing as well as the customer call centre on behalf of 23 energy marketers located throughout Alberta.  In the early years, profits were generated by selling electricity a kilowatt at a time at a 1 cent margin. It's Official: Direct Energy has been sold!!!

    The deal is done. Direct Energy has been sold to NRG Energy Inc, an American company, headquartered in New Jersey. The finalization of the purchase was announced on January 5, in a very low-key notice posted on the NRG Energy website. With such a quiet announcement, we wonder if most of Direct’s customers have been left in the dark about the deal. Why the secrecy and what does this mean for Direct Energy customers?   As a Regulated Rate Option (RRO) customer buying electricity or natural gas at AUC government regulated retail prices, your account has also been sold as part of this deal.   Why does this matter?
